Seven-Time SCCA Solo II National Champion Danny Popp Talks Corvettes, LS Motors and How to be Successful

If you’re at all familiar with the grassroots autocross and time attack scene, chances are, you’ve heard of Danny Popp. He’s the guy that seems to always be holding giant trophies on Sundays at premier events around the U.S. and drives nothing but blue Corvettes. Well, it was high time we chatted with Mr. Popp to get his thoughts on just why he likes those blue Corvettes so much, why he races and see if there was any wisdom he could impart upon us.

Danny grew up in an essentially Chevrolet-dedicated family. Both his mother and father were NCCC (National Council of Corvette Clubs) and SCCA members. Danny’s father was an engineer at General Electric and had a passion for all things mechanical, which he instilled upon little Danny at an early stage. Danny grew up around a couple Corvettes (‘65 327/350 coupe and ‘72 LT-1 coupe), 70 1/2 Z28 and even a Corvair. On weekends, Danny said he would attend autocrosses with his mother and father where they became a bit of local legends.

Years later, and now Danny is a seven-time SCCA Solo II national champion (amongst many other wins) and is also a full-time certified Corvette specialist/technician at McCluskey Chevrolet in Cincinnati, Ohio. Danny tells us he also night-shadows as the Owner, proprietor and sole employee of RAFT Motorsports, Inc., a consulting firm for several national racers.

Eibach, JRi encourage teams to pre-register for springs, shock rentals for Daytona and Talladega

TOLEDO, Ohio (Jan. 6, 2017) – Officials from the Automobile Racing Club of America, in conjunction with Eibach Springs and JRi Shocks, are encouraging ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards race teams to pre-register for the rental of mandatory springs and shocks for the season opening Lucas Oil 200 Driven by General Tire at Daytona International Speedway.

“We ran into some challenges last year, in trying to accommodate all the at-track rentals,” said David Cardey, Motorsports Specialist for Eibach Springs. “We’d like the teams to create an account with us, in order to make the at-track rental program more efficient.”

The ARCA Racing Series mandates the use of specific Eibach supplied spring rates for both front and rear springs at Daytona and Talladega, available from Eibach on a per-event rental basis.

ARCA mandates the use of specific JRi shocks on the rear for both restrictor plate events, also available from JRi on a per-event rental basis. JRi will be at the ARCA Daytona open test January 13-15, and will have shocks available for rent, or purchase.

Teams are encouraged to establish accounts with both Eibach and JRi by filling out the forms available on competitor site at www.arcaracing.com.

F4 U.S. Partners with Industry Leader

Competitors in the 2017 Formula 4 United States Championship Powered by Honda will have the opportunity to increase their total cash prize earnings by $3,000 during the six-event 2017 season with the new JRi Shocks Hard Charger Award.

The F4 U.S. Championship competitor who passes the most cars during the three-race event weekend will now earn a $500 cash prize from industry leader JRi Shocks. One competitor during each event will be recognized in victory circle at the end of the weekend’s final race.

“With the addition of the JRi Shocks Hard Charger contingency prize we now have the opportunity to offer prize money to more competitors while showcasing their skills throughout the field,” said SCCA Pro Racing CEO and President Mike Collins. “The JRi Shocks Hard Charger Award allows a driver who maybe had a difficulty in qualifying, demonstrate his or her race craft skills by advancing positions throughout the course of the race. This award will allow us to highlight the competitor who demonstrated the best drive of the weekend.”

The ‘new-era of racing shocks’ company based in Mooresville, North Carolina, equipped each of the 17 F4 U.S. fielded cars with double adjustable open-wheel shocks during the Championship’s inaugural season. The 2017 F4 U.S. grid is expected to grow to more than 35 cars in 2017, all outfitted in JRi Shocks.

“We were honored to be a part of the inaugural season of the FIA-certified F4 United States Championship,” states Marty Flannery, JRi Shocks Open Wheel Market Manager. “After seeing the success of the series, there was no doubt that we wanted to be involved as a series sponsor where we, along with the great existing sponsors such as Onroak Automotive, Honda and Pirelli, can help develop talent both on and off the racetrack. We hope that this is the beginning of JRi Shocks being more involved with the SCCA Pro Racing family as a whole.”

JRi Shocks will also be on-location during F4 U.S. events for product demonstration and featured in competitors’ liveries.

The series second season will debut at Homestead-Miami Speedway in Homestead, Florida, April 8-9.

JRi Adds Optional Air Dump Feature To Drag Racing Shocks

dragzine-pic-1Article courtesy of Dragzine

There are a number of high-tech operations that go on in the suspension system of a drag racing vehicle that occur during the course of a run without those watching trackside ever being aware of what’s at-play between the fenders. One of the less noticeable attributes of modern shocks and suspension setups is the use of air-assists and air dumps to drive the backhalf of the car into the racing surface and get the spoiler out of the wind.

JRi Shocks has equipped their air-assisted, double adjustable drag racing shock with a smooth body and other elements to allow for air dump operation, providing racers with an added degree of tunability further down the racetrack.
